Colchester Café Scientifique: Hydrogen

Hydrogen: A key player in the fight against climate change?

Over the past five years, hydrogen technologies have attracted
significant global investment, taking a more prominent role in
net-zero strategies. But why is hydrogen becoming a flagship for
decarbonisation of problematic sectors and does it truly live up to
the hype?

This talk explores hydrogen’s growing role in the fight against climate change, examining where it fits in the near-term energy transition and how it could reshape the way we power our lives over
the coming century. From decarbonising heavy industry and transport to supporting renewable energy systems, hydrogen promises both opportunity and controversy.

Thomas Liddy, PhD candidate from the University of Nottingham, will introduce the fundamentals of hydrogen, its current and emerging role within the UK energy landscape, and the challenges that lie ahead. The talk will also showcase examples of cutting-edge research across all aspects of this topic.
