Colchester Café Scientifique: Deep-sea Exploration

A journey of species discovery: from expedition to paper

This talk will guide you through the fascinating process of deep-sea exploration — from the logistical challenges of planning and
conducting expeditions through the collection of biological samples, taxonomic identification of species, and ultimately to the formal description of new organisms.

Dr Michelle Taylor is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Life Sciences at the University of Essex.  Her research focuses on deep-sea ecosystems, including coral reefs, hydrothermal vents, and seamounts.

Michelle is particularly interested in understanding what drives biodiversity in these environments and how we can mitigate human impacts on these vulnerable habitats.

Colchester Café Scientifique started in 2010 and is a place where, for the price of a cup of tea or coffee, people can learn about and discuss scientific issues. The speakers give their time free of charge.

Access will be via the garden gate entrance at the rear.  For directions, see:- https://what3words.com/formed.handle.sits
